November 19, 2025 represents a historic date for our community: the ‘Eugenio Monti’ Sliding Centre in Cortina d’Ampezzo has received official homologation certification from the International Bobsleigh, Skeleton and Luge Federations (IBSF).

This is a fundamental step that confirms the full compliance of the facility with the technical standards required for Olympic and international competitions.
The homologation comes at the end of a complex path made up of intense work, verifications, tests and collaborations with world-class technicians and athletes. The inspections carried out in recent days have given positive results on all aspects: safety, ice quality, supporting infrastructure and general functionality of the track, sanctioning the full technical compliance of the facility with world standards.

The facility, designed with advanced high-performance refrigeration system and environmentally friendly solutions, is now ready for the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Games.
And already from November 21 to 23, 2025, it debuted in the first leg of the international World Cup circuit, meeting with great success among athletes and sportsmen and women who tried the circuit.
An achievement that reflects months of intense work, coordination and strategic vision, and that delivers to Cortina a state-of-the-art facility that is functional, safe and capable of accommodating the challenges and opportunities of the global sports scene in the coming years.

Statement by Gianluca Lorenzi Mayor of Cortina d’Ampezzo.

“Today’s is an important acknowledgement, which fills us with satisfaction, of the enormous success that the Sliding Centre is proving to be able to express. On the one hand from a competitive point of view, thanks to the athletes we have had the honor of hosting these days; on the other hand for the value of the homologation and the debut with the World Cup, which confirm the quality of the facility.

The greatest satisfaction, however, is to see the community reappropriate this historic place and live it with enthusiasm: our volunteers, supporters, associations and the whole world that revolves around bobbing culture have shown extraordinary commitment, restoring life and identity to a structure that is truly Cortina’s again.

I thank the Government Commissioner for making this achievement possible, which for many seemed like a miracle. It was exciting to see the races broadcast in Italy and abroad, with images of our valley, our mountains and a Cortina that showed itself ready, thanks also to the snowfall that framed this weekend in the best possible way.

I invite everyone to experience this Olympic energy, to share the positive spirit that these sports bring and to look forward to the future with confidence. The Olympics are already bringing added value to our community and will be an opportunity for a true sports renaissance, not only for Cortina but for the entire territory.”

Calendar of races at the Sliding Centre

The Cortina Sliding Centre, located in Cortina d’Ampezzo, will be a new, state-of-the-art facility dedicated to bobsledding, skeleton and luge. The track will be built in the area that has been home to sliding sports since 1923. On the same site was erected the track that in 1956 hosted the competitions of the 7th Winter Olympics and saw Eugenio Monti, an adopted Ampezzo native, win two silver medals, to which he later added two gold and two bronze medals between Innsbruck 1964 and Grenoble 1968. The goal of the redevelopment is to project Cortina’s ancient tradition in gliding sports into the future. The track has been approved since March 2025.

Calendar of competitions at Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium

The Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium, located in Cortina d’Ampezzo, is the facility where the three curling tournaments will be held. Opened in 1952, it was built to host the 1956 Winter Olympics and the Opening Ceremony was held inside. The original design is still used today, partly because the design was meant to last. In preparation for the Milan Cortina 2026 Games, the electrical systems, accessibility and locker rooms were upgraded.

It has been the stage for great sporting feats in its history: from Olympic gold in figure skating by Carlo Fassi, to the men’s curling World Championships in 2010 and mixed doubles in 2009.

Cortina is one of the three major curling hubs in Italy, along with Pinerolo and Cembra. Stefania Constantini, skip of the Italian women’s team and Olympic gold medalist in mixed doubles paired with Amos Mosaner in Beijing 2022, grew up on the Ampezzo ice: the first and so far only Italian five-circle medal in curling.

Calendar of women’s alpine ski races

The Tofane Alpine Skiing Centre, located in Cortina d’Ampezzo, is the facility where the women’s alpine skiing competitions will be held. Built in the heart of the Dolomites, the complex has already been an Olympic venue in 1956, when all competitions in the alpine skiing program were held there.

The slope runs on the slopes of Tofana di Mezzo and is one of the most iconic tracks of the Women’s World Cup. The downhill slope starts from the Pomedes refuge, while the Super-G slope starts from the Duca d’Aosta refuge. Both come within walking distance of the center of Cortina.

After the 1956 Games, it has been a permanent stop for the Women’s World Cup since 1993, and downhill and Super-G are held there every year. On three occasions (1969, 1990 and 2023) it has also been the scene of trials of the men’s maximum circuit, with a total of five races between downhill and Super-G. In 2021, it hosted the 46th Alpine Ski World Cup. The most successful Italian on the Ampezzo snows is Isolde Kostner with five successes, while at the overall level, the U.S. Lindsey Vonn excels with 12 triumphs.

The Municipality of Cortina d’Ampezzo, in collaboration with the Veneto Region, other institutional stakeholders and with the technical operational support of KPMG, has developed the Financial Economic Plan (PEF) to ensure the sustainable management of the “Eugenio Monti” Sliding Centre and the full functionality of the slope also in the post-Olympic period.

The PEF is based on strict cost control, diversification of revenue sources, and the enhancement of sports and tourism activities, ensuring efficient and sustainable management by zeroing or minimizing the public contribution once the runway management has come on stream.

A model of integrated sustainability

The plan is for the track to remain fully operational even after the Games, becoming the site of an international sports calendar. Cortina Foundation, in collaboration with the relevant federations, is already working to define official competitions and training periods that will ensure regular technical use of the facility, making it a stable and strategic resource for the area.

The project also enhances the facility as a tourist and recreational bob-race hub. The so-called taxi-bob activity, a kind of amusement park attraction with professional riders, designed for both winter and summer, will allow residents and visitors to experience the thrill of the track in an accessible and safe manner.

In addition, complementary revenues are expected to be generated from some of the municipality’s real estate assets, such as the Former Bakery and the Market Square area, which are undergoing redevelopment: thanks to the investments taken care of by SIMICO, these spaces will be made functional and put to income, generating a structural profitability intended to help cover the facility’s operating costs and will provide concrete support for the long-term economic balance envisaged in the plan.

A concrete commitment of the Veneto Region

As part of this path, the Veneto Region has allocated €3 million to support the start-up phase of the plant in the three-year period 2025-2027, dedicated not to covering operating losses but to the purchase of equipment and initial supplies.

Statements

Luca Zaia, President of the Veneto Region

“The new bobsled run in Cortina is much more than a sports infrastructure: it is a symbol of what Veneto and Italy are capable of building. A work of great technical and architectural value, it will be an engine of growth for youth sports, for winter and summer tourism and for our entire mountain territory. This Sliding Centre will become an international reference point, hosting training, competitions and meetings that will train new generations of champions, in the wake of the legacy left by Eugenio Monti, the legendary ‘flying red’. Investing today in facilities like this means leaving a concrete legacy: a living space, capable of generating value, opportunities and pride for the future. And with the possibility, even in summer, to offer tourists and sportsmen the unique experience of guided descents.”

Gianluca Lorenzi, Mayor of Cortina d’Ampezzo

“The Sliding Centre is not just a sports facility: it is a challenge that we have taken on as a community and are turning into a concrete opportunity for Cortina. Thanks to a serious financial plan, the support of the Veneto Region and the synergistic work of these months, today we can say that this facility has a solid foundation to look to the future. We do not want to leave cathedrals in the desert, but places that are alive and frequented, capable of generating value – for athletes, for tourists, for all our people. It is a project on which we will continue to work with determination. Because this runway, born amidst a thousand discussions, will instead be one of the most beautiful legacies we will leave to future generations.”
