Memorandum of Understanding Ministry of Culture/MilanCortina 2026

“The Milan Cortina 2026 Foundation, host of the Veneto Region at the Palazzo Grandi Stazioni in Venice, signed this morning, during the press conference presenting the Cultural Program of the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, the Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Culture. A document that aims to promote, through culture and creativity, the values of sports, Olympism and Paralympism.

The Cultural Program includes a series of initiatives that embrace music, theater, cinema, fashion, design, museum realities and a series of proposals from the territories that will receive the Foundation’s patronage. Among the various activations is also one dedicated to Museums for the Olympics and Paralympics: in fact, during the Games, the Ministry of Culture will promote and facilitate access to cultural itineraries and routes identified in the territories that will be protagonists in 2026.

The event was attended by the Minister of Culture, Dario Franceschini, the President of the Veneto Region, Luca Zaia, the President of CONI and the Milan Cortina 2026 Foundation, Giovanni Malagò, and the CEO of the Foundation, Vincenzo Novari.

Promoting the culture of sports and territories is one of the central goals of the Milan Cortina 2026 Foundation. The Memorandum of Understanding is therefore a key step in the Road to the Games.

Six projects that will feature some of the most representative figures of the Italian cultural scene in the role of Artistic Director. Juries of experts will then contribute to the selection of the entries to be presented to the public for voting on the winners.

  1. MUSIC ACCOMPANIES THE GAMES

The contest that will elect the Anthem of Milan Cortina 2026 is aimed at the Bands, Chorales and Conservatories of Italy: to them the challenge of composing the song that will accompany the Road to the Games. The project is carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of University and Research. Under the artistic direction of Maestro Peppe Vessicchio two songs will be identified, the winner will instead be chosen by the people through a voting mechanism as was already the case for the official emblem.

  1. MILAN CORTINA 2026 SHORT FILM CONTEST

Milano Cortina 2026 Short Film Contest is the project, sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, dedicated to short films. Young Italian videomakers, directors and creatives will tell their relationship with mountains and sports. Each year the authors of the best proposals will be the protagonists of some special evenings to be held in Rome.

  1. POSTER CONTEST

Poster Contest is an international challenge to create the official poster for the Milan Cortina 2026 Games, drawing on the know-how and heritage of the Salce National Museum in Treviso, a unique state museum dedicated to advertising graphics. Through a dedicated social campaign, 226 artists – 126 from Italy and 100 from abroad, one from each participating country – will compete in a contest for the winning idea. The initiative will start in 2022 and will be crowned in 2024 by an exhibition in which the best works will be displayed.

  1. OPEN THEATERS

Theater companies on stage for Open Theaters. The goal of the initiative is to pay tribute to the great theatrical tradition of our country through the writing of an original script focused on sport and its values. The selected proposals will then be staged, by the Foundation, and will become some of the touring content in the run-up to the Games.

  1. HERITAGE PROGRAM

The Heritage Program will be the most ambitious and engaging initiative: the Milan Cortina 2026 Foundation, in collaboration with the Territories and using a committee of experts and artistic directors, will sponsor the most significant projects in the field of sport, its values and its narrative.

  1. MUSEUMS FOR THE OLYMPICS and PARALYMPICS.

Free or facilitated access to museums and archaeological parks located within the framework of the Olympic and Paralympic events, thanks to the MiC, which will identify together with the regions and local authorities cultural itineraries and routes in the territories affected by the competitions and in neighboring ones, involving UNESCO sites and cultural places present.

Finally, the MiC and the Foundation, in collaboration with regions, local authorities and cultural institutes and in synergy with cultural and creative enterprises, will cooperate to implement cultural initiatives capable of promoting, including through digital, cultural heritage and Made in Italy.

In this way, Milan Cortina 2026 wants to promote the immense artistic-cultural heritage of our country, becoming an interpreter of the culture and style that has always characterized Italy in the eyes of the world.”
