In the run-up to the 2026 Winter Olympic Games, the issue of security – understood both as protection from external threats and as protection of citizens and visitors in case of emergencies or critical situations – takes on a central role. Cortina d’Ampezzo is preparing for this important event through teamwork between institutions, law enforcement and operational structures in the area.
With this in mind, a well-participated technical meeting convened by the Prefect of Belluno, Dr. Antonello Roccoberton, was held yesterday morning at the Cortina Town Hall. Speakers at the meeting included:
– Gianluca Lorenzi, Mayor of Cortina d’Ampezzo
– Stefano Ghezze, Councillor of the Municipality of Cortina d’Ampezzo
– Roberto Della Rocca, Questore of Belluno
– Claudio Mora General of the Italian Army Corps
– Matteo Carretto, Provincial Commander of the Belluno Fire Department
– Enrico Pigozzo, Provincial Commander of the Belluno Carabinieri
– Roberto Atzori, Provincial Commander of the Belluno Guardia di Finanza
– Cristina Barbarino, Director of the Belluno SUEM 118 Operations Center
They also took the floor:
– Michele Di Gallo, General Manager of the Cortina Foundation
– Andrea Francisi, Chief Games Operations Officer of the Milan Cortina 2026 Foundation
– Daria Miriam Re, Security Manager of the Milan Cortina 2026 Foundation
The council hall was packed, with the presence of numerous civil and military authorities, who attentively followed the speeches and confirmed the willingness to address in a coordinated and concrete way the challenges related to safety and security in view of the 2026 Olympic and Paralympic event.
“It was a very constructive meeting,” said Mayor Lorenzi, “We finally received proper documentation from the Milan Cortina 2026 Foundation, which allowed us to take a significant step forward in planning security measures.
During the meeting, it was decided that restricted technical tables coordinated by the Prefecture would be activated immediately after the Easter holidays. Detailed work will be done on flow management, traffic, sensitive areas and operational response, with a focus ranging from accidental risk prevention to public order management, not only for the Cortina area but for the entire provincial area.
The mayor stressed the importance of reconciling security needs with the tourist vocation of the resort: “It is essential to find a balance that will allow Cortina to continue to be a tourist destination during the Olympic event. Security measures will be calibrated to provide the necessary protection, trying to cause as little inconvenience as possible and not compromise the livability and accessibility of the area.”
